IBM (NYSE:IBM) today announced a new dynamic data warehousing platform, built upon the industry-leading DB2 9 “Viper” data server, that is designed to help customers quickly and easily gain greater insight into their business information.
The new DB2 Data Warehouse 9 utilizes IBM’s patented pureXML technology that allows customers to efficiently store and use data in an XML format. XML is increasingly used as the standard data interchange format between disparate applications, businesses and domains. It also incorporates DB2 9 “venom” technology that compresses row data to reduce storage requirements, improve I/O efficiency, and provide quicker data access from the disk.
DB2 9 is IBM’s new data server and includes the most significant database technology enhancements introduced to the industry in more than two decades. Today’s announcement comes just two months after the launch of DB2 9 and continues the momentum of IBM’s data server which has added record numbers of new customers and compiled thousands of competitive wins over other vendors such as Oracle and Microsoft.
Customers have embraced DB2 9 and many are moving their databases from Oracle to IBM’s new data server, including: Cardinal Health, American Electric Power, Central Michigan University, Farmers Insurance and Teleglobe. These new DB2 9 customers have cited the product’s combination of industry-first features, and superior reliability and performance, as the reasons for their migration.
“As a result of the groundbreaking features in DB2 9, we are seeing a great deal of customer interest,” said Arvind Krishna, vice president IBM data servers. “Our customers are telling us that DB2 9 has ushered in a new era of data server technology that helps them to grow their businesses. By extending these features into DB2 Data Warehouse 9 we have again raised the bar and delivered the industry’s most advanced dynamic warehousing platform.”
DB2 Data Warehouse 9 outperforms the limited offerings of competitors by excelling at enabling mixed workloads that span the largest multi-user transactional systems (trading floors and reservations systems) to the largest pure analytical workloads involving massive multi-billion row tables and the extremely complex and deeply nested transactions often created by leading OLAP tools. DB2 Data Warehouse 9 includes development and management tools for rapid and efficient delivery and administration of warehouses that provide optimal access and performance. DB2 9 provides the industry’s only 3-way partitioning – including leading multidimensional clustering; cube definitions; transformation modules; and data flow diagrams.
The DB2 9 data server marks a milestone in the five-year IBM development project that has transformed traditional, static database technology into an interactive, vibrant data server that enables clients to improve their ability to manage multiple types of information, such as documents, Web pages, and digitally signed XML transactions. IBM’s new data server provides an industry-first seamless and simultaneous information flow of both XML and relational data, regardless of format, platform or location. The DB2 Data Warehouse 9 extends this capability into additional markets.
DB2 Data Warehouse 9 will also power IBM’s industry-leading data warehouse appliance offerings based on the ‘Balanced Configuration Unit’ or BCU. The BCU is a fully integrated and scalable data warehouse solution that combines software, server, and storage resources to maximize business intelligence and information management performance for enterprises.
